Why Starting Dentistry Early Is Important for Kids

As parents, we want to do the best for our kids and that includes creating healthy habits we hope will last a lifetime. Regular dental visits are an essential part of good overall health. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) along with other dental professionals suggest that kids are ready for their first dental appointment when their first tooth comes in. At our Monroe Township, NJ dental office, we hold the same belief about children’s dentistry.

Here’s why.

Baby Teeth Lay an Essential Foundation for Adult Teeth

Because kids will eventually lose their baby teeth—also called primary teeth—many people underestimate their importance. But they actually serve a number of purposes, all of which are crucial:

  • They enable children to eat healthy foods.
  • They are needed for proper speech.
  • They hold the space for the adult teeth that are growing beneath the surface.

Taking good care of baby teeth sets children up for healthy smiles when they are adults.

Good Habits Start Early

A lot of adults have anxiety about going to the dentist, and this often stems from something that happened when they were children. Perhaps one of their own parents was fearful about visiting the dentist, and this fear was passed on.

We go out of our way to ensure that your kids are comfortable when they are here. We will never do anything beyond what they will tolerate, and we will always speak to them in age-appropriate language so they understand what they are experiencing. We want to make sure your children have good feelings about the dentist because kids who go to the dentist regularly tend to become adults who go to the dentist regularly.
