Types of Mouthguards and How They Protect Your Teeth

Mouthguards, in some cases called oral appliances or dental splints, are prescribed by your Monroe Township dentist. They protect your teeth during athletics or relieve the pain and symptoms of bruxism and TMJ.

Our dental office offers custom nightguards and mouthguards to address specific issues.

What Is a Mouthguard?

A mouthguard is typically a custom oral appliance that fits snuggly over the teeth. This guard aims to protect the teeth and gums during contact- or ball-oriented sports.

When competing, it is all too easy to lose a tooth or sustain an oral injury. Your custom mouthguard helps prevent these types of mishaps.

Your dentist may also recommend a mouthguard during orthodontics to protect soft tissues from irritation that can result from metal brackets.

However, it’s recommended that your Monroe Township dentist fit you with a custom mouthguard. If you purchase one in a sporting goods store or online, it will not offer the same level of protection because it will not fit your teeth correctly. Additionally, a loose-fitting mouthguard can irritate your gums and oral tissues.

What Is a Nightguard?

Types of Mouthguards and How They Protect Your Teeth

A nightguard is also a custom appliance, but in this case, we use it to treat bruxism—nighttime teeth grinding and clenching.

Untreated bruxism can increase your risks for cavities, dental fractures, and even tooth loss. Additionally, bruxism is a painful condition that can damage your jaw joints (TMJs). If you have bruxism, you may notice jaw, neck, shoulder, and head pain and exaggerated musculature in front of the ears.

A custom nightguard gently separates the upper and lower jaws during sleep, preventing grinding and clenching.

As with mouthguards, it’s always better to forgo store-bought products and get a custom appliance made by your dentist.
